Helping Britain to reach Net Zero
Modernisation will mean less carbon emissions per flight, thanks to more direct and efficient routes.
Our airspace is reaching capacity in its current form, which means planes are often directed by air traffic control to fly further than needed. This uses more fuel and creates unnecessary emissions.
When airspace is modernised, planes will be able to take a more direct route from A to B. Modernisation will also mean our airspace is organised better, so that planes can climb to higher altitudes and descend continuously, in a shorter space of time. This will reduce noise impacts for local communities and burn less fuel, which is better for the environment.
Airspace modernisation is a key part of the aviation sector’s plans to decarbonise. Simply put: shorter time in the air + more direct routes = less fuel burn = reduced emissions per flight.
